Bernie Sanders May 08, 2025

[based on speech given to US Senate]

"Thursday marks 68 days and counting since ANY humanitarian aid was allowed into Gaza. For more than nine weeks, Israel has blocked all supplies: no food, no water, no medicine, and no fuel.

Hundreds of truckloads of lifesaving supplies are waiting to enter Gaza, sitting just across the border, but are denied entry by Israeli authorities.

… Defense Minister Israel Katz said, “Israel’s policy is clear: No humanitarian aid will enter Gaza, and blocking this aid is one of the main pressure levers.” "

The US has a lot of citizens in Israel, and a lot of Israeli citizens with families in the US, so it’s hard to turn from the historic unconditional support to conditional support or even lack of support. No matter who is in office, the reality of this is strong.

Just the same as the NATO countries are finding it complicated decoupling from the MAGA US. It’s not so simple to unwind national relationships. It would be nice if it was easy, but it just isn’t, especially in a democracy where there’s a significant fraction of voters who are unmoved by the Gaza disaster. It’s sad but true.

Christian Zionists far outnumber Jewish Zionists

The vast majority of people want a weapons embargo and an end to the genocide, even a majority of Republican voters.

The reality is that the US is funding genocide. That by the requirement of both international law and domestic law, they have an obligation to cease all weapon transfers to Israel. That’s on top of the popular position and morally correct position of opposing genocide.

Anyone making excuses for why the US needs to continue funding Israel is supporting this genocide.

Genocide is a crime against humanity according to the United Nations.

Protesting genocide is a hate crime according to the USA (and a sadly growing number of other complicit states).

History is going to absolutely shit on them. History is written by the victors, but younger generations get to have the last word. And there is a huge generational divide on this issue.

If it’s the winning issue so many centrists act like it is, they should be way louder about it.

Why aren’t they proud of their accomplishment?

And AIPAC, and other de facto foreign government pressure groups that wouldn’t be allowed to have a tenth as much influence on American politics if they were representing any other country.

Literally every country on earth is doing nothing. Where is your precious China, ML? Why don’t you harp about that? Oh right, it’s because you don’t actually care about Gaza or genocide.

            But Australia tho.

            But the entire EU tho.

            But Canada tho.

            But Brazil tho.

No one does anything. The US is crippled on the international front, this is literally the best time to stand up. Any country could go in and provide aid to Gaza. Any of them could stand up to Israel.

But none of them are, and no one cares. Especially here on lemmy where the only genocide that we talk about is the kind we can blame the US for.

The article posted mentions the United States. You are free to post articles about other states’ complicity and start that conversation in a thread about the state/s you choose.

Oh it’s you. I can talk about whatever I want wherever I want in the comments. So can you. That’s the point of the internet.

If you want to have a polite discussion where neither of us make personal insults or say “so you’re saying….” or

focus on random quotes to insult instead of making rational counterpoints

                Then let me know.

Sir, between the two of us, only one of us has been rude and insulting. I’d welcome any url of any thread where I’ve done that.

Secondly, isn’t this the red herrings and whataboutery people upset with any criticism of their exceptionalim constantly bang on about?

The thread is about how the US congress is silent about its complicity in the Gaza genocide. If you want to talk about how much you hate .ml and china (but actually just ml) that’s fine, but don’t pretend it’s out of like to talk about the US’ involvement in genocide in a thread about the US’ involvement in genocide.

Right the entire topic is asking why a group of people aren’t talking about something. I’d like to expand that circle a little wider and ask, why the fuck as no one talking about it?

But I guess complaining about humanity is too broad for these people. They need something specific to hate. So let’s blame Israel the US.

I have no problem with China—just hypocritical ML, who don’t actually care about human lives in Gaza, just crushing the west.

I didn’t realise China was providing arms to Israel. Because if they were, like they are providing arms to Russia, then they would be being at harped on, as they are. But there is one cuntry in particular that is enabling genocidal Israeli monsters. The US of fuckwitt A. Fuck Trump, Genocide Joe and every American who has allowed and continues to allow this heinous crime against humanity. You are the worst version of yourselves yet.

I don’t see Australia providing aid. Or even offering. Everyone wants to point a finger but the entire human race seems to not give a shit. Yeah, the largest arms manufacturer in the world provides arms to a lot of places, and that should stop being an export. The whole world should stop making guns.

And yeah we are a shitty version, and we are going to learn the hard way real soon.

No one can provide aid to Gaza unless Israel allow it. They will not. USA has vetoed all attempts to force a ceasefire through the UN, against the desires of almost every other country on the planet. The fingers are pointing for good reason. There is no indication Americans will learn anything. Except maybe how to live your best life under fascism. It must be frustrating. Australia is doing better, but not much. Our spineless leader still labels Israel as “a friend”.

Has anyone tried? A big convoy full of supplies and white flags? Just enter through Rafah and bypass Israel. Heck the beach is pretty big.

But it’s gonna be hard to find a country who likes Muslims enough.
