    It wasn’t a mistake. Cambodia takes that very seriously, as do the Thais.

    Historically the area went back and forth from what would be considered modern day Thailand to Cambodia.

    Angkor Wat was originally built as a Hindu city, as were many Cambodian monuments.

    I was unaware that the Vietnamese cared that much, though they also have historical claim there.

    I would imagine this is about relations more than anything.

      Southern Vietnam was also Cambodian, so this news is surprising. Someone annoyed the wrong person (probably Hun Sen).

      I was in Thailand one time watching this government made video in a museum about the archeological digs in some of the areas that they have had fights over. They kept showing things dug up and saying it was “evidence”. At the time I thought it was a translation thing. It isn’t, it is very important to the Thai government that they prove that certain places were historically their land. Especially given how much tourist money those sites bring in.

      I have no strong opinions on who the rightful rulers of Ayutthaya are.
