Started out on the fmhy.ml just prior to the .ml debacle. On lemmy.world now, but they have just started banning piracy communities. The new fmhy instance, of course, has already died before I got to try it.

sigh Married pasty male looking for lemmy instance that:

  • Has some decent uptime / Reliable / Not on a fly by night top level domain
  • Hates Nazi’s and doesn’t hesitate to ban, block and defederate such crap
  • Tolerant of piracy communities and federations
  • Oh, and will let me see comments in the Technology community. That isn’t working for me here.

Suggestions welcome.

Is there fediverse reciprocity? I mean, can users on those instances subscribe to sublemmits on this instance, or is that blocked, too?

        Lemmy.world hasn’t defederated dbzer0. Lemmy.world just doesn’t want to host pirate communities.

So, you can login to lemmy.world, then search, subscribe and interact with pirate dbzer0 communities.

This is not entirely correct. lemmy.world hasn’t defederated from dbzer0, but it has blocked it’s largest piracy community.

Will dbzer0 posts show up in the Subscribed feed if it’s not hosted on lemmy.world? Will it get sorted by Hot?

Why can’t lemmy.world simply redirect users to dbzer0? Why are the communities effectively shadow banned? If the main concern is lemmy.world not wanting to actually host them, rather than hiding them and trying to pretend they don’t exist, why can’t there just be some sort of placeholder that informs users that they cannot access this community on lemmy.world and they need to go-

-ya know what? I got halfway through writing that and got tired of it. This is exhausting, and I’ve been here for 2 months.

Lemmy needs an app or a UI that unites all this in a simple fashion so users don’t have to go through all this every time an admin decides to get picky with what they’re willing to host. All this shit need to be behind the curtain. Users should just be able to use any instance and see anything on Lemmy they want to see, whether the admins host it on their server or not.

maybe this is the simplest answer to your question…

here is your comment as viewed from dbzer0 https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/comment/1959063

here is this lemmy.world community as viewed from dbzer0 https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/[email protected]

so everything is still working in that direction

seems like lemmy.world only blocked communities though, I think if you fully block an instance then you won’t send or receive anything with it?

for comparison I used https://radiation.party/c/[email protected] and it doesn’t show anything new there because programming.dev has them blocked

It’s all individual choices. You can see what dbzer0 blocks at the bottom of this list - lemmy.world isn’t included in the ‘blocked’ part.

          dbzer0 is not blocked from lemmy.world - https://lemmy.world/instances.

So while you are technically correct that you can publicly see who is blocking who by looking at their instance list, your answer isn’t relevant to the question of blocked communities where there hasn’t been total instance-blocking.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to see an instance’s blocked communities except by reading/searching their modlog.

Ah sorry. You’re right, of course. I saw the word ‘fediverse’ and responded without really thinking.

I read that even subscribers on lemmy.world might not even notice that the community is blocked, so there’s not much hope for the rest of us.

Lemmy.world users no longer see it in all/community search results, and if trying to navigate to the Lemmy.world url for the community specifically (like this: https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected] ) they just get an error.

So the only way they would discover that communities are blocked is if they absolutely know the community actually exists by visiting the foreign instance.

The only other way I’ve discovered you can see what communities an instance has blocked is by parsing through the public modlog.

sh.itjust.works is great, cause it actually does just work.

So far they meet all your criteria (except for defederating extremists, we hold democratic votings about it unless its something against the laws where we are hosted)

Host your own instance and you can control what you federate and defederate with.

Otherwise you’re probably not going to find an instance that fits all of your wants.

You’ll probably just want to join a piracy geared instance as your home instance if that’s important to you.

Problem is that selfhosting makes it significantly harder to be anonymous when everyone can see your IP with a trivial lookup. Or I guess you could rent a VPS instead of running it locally.

Some might say that’s a feature, not a bug. If you’re not willing to stand by your words, then who are you, really?

        But fine, let’s talk:

There’s Cloudflare, for what they’re worth on privacy and anonymity.

There’s VPS, as you say, but they are responsive to subpoenas.

There are sketchy “data haven” counties whose sketchy economy you’re fueling with your rent. (* Cough * .ml * cough *)

        Chose, but chose wisely.

Just because you choose a domain in a “data haven”, doesn’t mean that you’re necessary more or less private.

It does help with piracy for not getting a site shutdown but I think that’s the only reason.

Also you CAN run a small instance for free through Oracle cloud (as long as you enable swap if you’re using the amd instances) but your main limitations are going to be storage, as I use around a gig-ish per day with subscribing to a large percentage of the large communities (though there are things that are supposed to help with this like LPP, but I’ve never used it myself)

You(and everyone else) are welcome at endlesstalk.org.

I prioritize uptime and have setup monitoring to notify, if anything goes down(See here). I have no problem banning/defederating Nazi’s and the like, but I generally don’t take action unless, an instance/users aren’'t following the rules. I’m open for requests and discussion though.

Currently I’m the only admin, but I’m in the process of changing the setup of the site, so other admins would be able to fix the site, if anything should happen.

      I’d suggest lemmy.ca also.

Before I made my account here I was doing research to see if I was going to start my own instance or not. I had very similar requirements as yours but also some around security, patching, and long walks on the beach.

Honestly, the lemmy.ca admins (including Shadow) seem to know their stuff. They’re active on github, patch regularly, and actually care about the community. As an end user, everything I could ask for. <3

Really? I haven’t seen anything I would consider Nazi content in my feed. Granted, I mostly only pay attention to my subscribed feed but I check out All daily and nothing has made me regret my choice. I don’t even know what their policy is. I assumed it was reasonable, not doors wide open.

Thank you, everyone. Found my new home. What was odd was that this thread I created (Hi, I’m also HR_Pufnstuf) experienced the same problem with all threads in the Technology community… where I can’t see any of the comments except my own. Luckily I was able to find all your comments in my inbox. After visiting all your wonderfull suggestions, save for the kbin’s, I’ve chosen to settle here. I’ll keep the lemmy.world around as a backup.

Also, wanna say the default theme here is pretty slick

Again, thanks everyone. I appreciated the feedback!

    PseudoSpock / HR_Pufnstuff

Edit: I had a typo in my sig of PseudoSpock I just fixed. That typo had made it offensive and I am VERY sorry!

I had the same problem with not being able to see comments, even in my own thread. I found that the issue was with the language I selected in my settings. I was told to select ‘Undetermined’ but I think this only let me see other undetermined posts and not those who have theirs set to English. So I clicked the big ‘X’ next to them in settings (deselecting any language) and now I see everyone’s comments. Hope that helps.
