American-led negotiators are edging closer to an agreement in which Israel would suspend its war in Gaza for about two months in exchange for the release of more than 100 hostages still held by Hamas, a deal that could be sealed in the next two weeks and would transform the conflict consuming the region.

Negotiators have developed a written draft agreement merging proposals offered by Israel and Hamas in the last 10 days into a basic framework that will be the subject of talks in Paris on Sunday. While there are still important disagreements to be worked out, negotiators are cautiously optimistic that a final accord is within reach, according to U.S. officials who insisted on anonymity to discuss sensitive talks.

Don’t they think that Hamas only has like 100 hostages left? So basically Hamas should give up all their real leverage for (possibly) 8 weeks of ceasefire while the Israelis prepare to renew their razing of all of Gaza, and steal 15% of all the land in Gaza for a ‘buffer zone’ that should be located in Israeli land, and Israeli civilians and settlers continue to make life miserable and untenable in the West Bank and elsewhere? Sounds like a great deal. /s

    Fucking murderous genocidal bastards.

You’re such a nice guy. Yes continue the war as you suggest. It’s only Palestinians after all.

The deal says Israel starts bombing again in 2 months. This “deal” does nothing to benefit the Palestinians.

I guess a ceasefire, aid and possible peace doesn’t count as helping Palestinians to you?

If it didn’t have a time limit, sure. As is, it just sounds like a way to get civilians to move back home so they can more efficiently bomb them in a few weeks.

Oh cool well yeah they should just keep the war going instead…that’ll definitely be better!

Or, ya know, negotiate a conditional cease fire that doesn’t expire in a few weeks, like someone taking a quick breather between punching you in the face.

It’s a ceasefire not peace. But stopping the shooting to allow aid and release the hostages is a good first step towards it

If you’re waiting for Israel to stop existing or for them to just roll over for hamas the Palestinians will starve by then. Time to join the real world and compromise.

Explain to me why the buffer zone should be located in Israeli land? The government of Gaza started this war and they are about to lose this war. Why should the winner of this war make territorial concessions for their own safety? That’s not how this works.

Gaza was created by refugees fleeing Israel’s invasion of Palestine. An Israeli buffer zone was Palestinian land 60 years ago.

I can only hope Israel doesn’t continue their genocidal campaign in 2 months (or sooner, they have a history of breaking deals).

Yea, seems like a bad deal for them. They give up all their leverage (horrible way to think about human lives…) and agree to return to being slaughtered 2 months later.

Mysteriously close to the International Court ruling the hostages should return and genocide must stop be avoided

Was there a new ruling? I only heard about that Israel has to make sure to prevent a genocide.

Nope, the user just chose to misrepresent the actual ruling, whether dishonestly or because they are simply misinformed. The court did not determine whether or not there was a genocide, which means it can’t have possibly ruled for it to stop, because that would have required the former.

Maybe your English is not good, but they told them to avoid genocide, not to stop it. So they did not tell them to stop because they did not accuse them of doing it.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

American-led negotiators are edging closer to an agreement in which Israel would suspend its war in Gaza for about two months in exchange for the release of more than 100 hostages still held by Hamas, a deal that could be sealed in the next two weeks and would transform the conflict consuming the region.

Negotiators have developed a written draft agreement merging proposals offered by Israel and Hamas in the last 10 days into a basic framework that will be the subject of talks in Paris on Sunday.

In a statement in Israel on Saturday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed his commitment to securing the release of those hostages who were not freed as part of a more limited agreement in November.

The short-lived truce in November, brokered by Mr. Biden along with Qatar and Egypt, resulted in a seven-day pause in the fighting in exchange for the release of more than 100 hostages by Hamas and about 240 Palestinian prisoners and detainees held by Israel.

Two days later, the president sent Mr. McGurk to the region, where he met with Gen. Abbas Kamel, the chief of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service and the nation’s second most powerful official, as well as Sheikh Mohammed of Qatar.

“They affirmed that all efforts must now be made to conclude a deal that would result in the release of all hostages together with a prolonged humanitarian pause in the fighting,” the White House said in its summary of the call with Mr. Sisi.
