He said when you have nothing left to live for, nothing really matters. And then nothing really matters, you can do whatever you want. And that freed him from everything that was holding him back.

Once you accept that there is no “plan” and nothing you do matters, the only things that matter are the things you choose to do. You are the master of your own destiny, for all the good and bad that it implies.
