But the war quickly turned into a civil war and stopped being about freedom against a brutal dictator. The foreign-backed rebel forces started retaliating on the Alawites. Yes, Bashar is responsible for starting the mess in the first place, but the foreign interference is the reason for that mess, which not only includes the West but also Russia. Look at Egypt: thanks to the non-interference, only 800 protesters were killed, which is still terrible—it could have been another Syria or Libya.
