  • Aaaaand there it is, this is exactly why normal people aren’t switching to these platforms, dude: not all of us are technical geeks, we have lives and things going on outside of this stuff, we don’t view everything in the same lens as you do (shocker, I know), not all of us are gonna worship what you worship, a lot of you are so goddamn hostile and then wonder why people refuse to leave social media, get real…

Again, not an expert here, do I need to put that in bold letters for you not to immediately be passive aggressive on first sight? I just got here dude, back off.

Also you guys constantly make random projects and forks off of stuff all the damn time, and their not small tiny little projects either from looking at them, from my perspective it literally is just about there being no interest, stop justifying laziness, nothing will ever get done with that logic.

My bad for bothering with your niche insulated platforms, will be a lot more hesitant with that next time, enjoy constantly scaring new people off and never knowing why I guess.

  • Hmmm, as simply as I can put it: it’s kinda like an image search engine (one that, believe it or not: actually gives you what your looking for, crazy I know), you type whatever your looking for, a bunch of stuff relating to that pops up, you pin and organise that stuff in your profiles boards and groupings or download them locally, and it adapts to you and gives you more relevant stuff that your interested in, super handy for references, trying to quickly find images, and ideas in general, that’s what it’s made for in the first place so it’s pretty popular among creatives for a reason!

I’m not an expert at all but, I’m kinda shocked something like that hasn’t ever been thought of for the fediverse, isn’t it’s whole thing like, everything can talk with everything? Wouldn’t a pinterest alternative be rather straight forward then? Just have the service crawl all of the fediverse for public images, and show them to users looking for them (I don’t think you’d need an insanely massive server or anything to pull that off, the service just links to everything and doesn’t technically store those images itself unless you click download or something), kinda how pinterest itself works I think so, I guess it’s just nobody here cares enough about that to bother with it, not enough artists/creatives around I’m presuming, bummer…

  • Thanks for the welcome! Appreciate it stranger!

That really sucks, but I guess that’s just how it is these days, thanks for the suggestions anyways. I occasionally hear about friendica, but there’s like, nothing for it outside of its website and years old posts mentioning it, kinda seems dead and desolate looking at it from the outside, only pixelfed sorta seems alive and kicking out of the two.

I’ll share some of my initial ramblings, experiences, complaints, and opinions on here incase you want that, if not then my bad, sorry lol:

    Spoiler

Tbh most of the fediverse still doesn’t seem to have reached a meaningful “critical mass” from my POV, mastodon is as close as it’s gonna get it seems, and even there it’s nowhere near as active as even the smallest of the mainstream social medias, also nobody on the fediverse seems to care about anything but politics and tech, that’s literally the most major con for me, those are the only 2 dominating topics on these platforms, can’t escape it, it’s everywhere, jesus lol, everything else is completely sidelined or straight up just not a topic because of how few people are around. Not “normie” or anything non-political/techy friendly at all it seems, nothing I’m interested in or need is active or cared about on any of these fediverse platforms, everything’s kinda dead and desolate outside of the main 2 topics, bummer. God I miss the old internet man, everything suuuuuucks now, wtf happened…

I’m really hoping things get better here because my god we badly need alternatives to the big platforms, there’s literally nothing outside of them anymore, I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t forced to, again sorta got forcefully plunged here whether this place was ready or not, but unless fediverse stuff starts really pushing advertising and actually catering to the normal person or something, anything, then I really can’t see this whole thing going anywhere beyond a niche secret geeky political club.

All the major problems I’m seeing here at a first glance that would prevent a normal person from ever trying these things out, simply stems from there being just not enough people, thus not many different people with different experiences and interests to talk to, thus not enough different public topics and communities, thus not enough engagement and activity, thus not enough speedy development or interest in developing more alternatives to stuff, thus not enough feedback, and thus: an echo chamber of just 2 things and not much else, and apparently everyone here takes pride in that and makes it their whole identity, lot of hostile politics obsessed people here on lemmy especially, not been a fun experience browsing around, so yeah, no clue if we’ll ever have any real competition to social media besides bluesky I guess, am probably gonna get dogpiled for saying all that but, just being honest here with my initial experiences: it’s not great, getting some cult vibes from some of the communities and people here, and those seem to be the majority, not the minority, so very difficult to get past them.

If It wasn’t clear, I don’t care whatsoever about politics, most normal people don’t and never will, i just wanna live man, already got enough issues on my plates as it is, 1 or 2 topics aren’t my whole identity, don’t need that shit shoved in my face 24/7 everywhere I go and guilt tripped/pressured into all that nonsense if I post in any vaguely populated community (posted a question about social media on a questions community and immediately got swarmed with exclusively political responses, just one single guy commented something that wasn’t political and that’s it, none of it even answered my question, it’s a complete echo chamber man, wtf am I supposed to engage with on here? 💀), it’s legitimately so annoying and frustrating, no wonder why there’s not that many people on here if the main content and audience are that. Definitely won’t post much on here if that’s what I should expect, even reddit as awful as it can be is much better in this regard then lemmy, never had that sort of experience on there even once, just wish they weren’t being assholes right now and banning a bunch of people for no reason or explanations, otherwise the people and content on reddit is just better then lemmy in every way possible, and feels way more welcoming then my initial experiences with lemmy (mastodon is a little friendlier, but waaaay harder to find and talk to anyone on it). There’s more to life then screaming at each other guys, don’t be shocked if this whole place stagnates because you keep scaring people away for not 100% being like you smh.

Again don’t get me wrong, you guys are almost onto something with this project, and if it succeeds then I legitimately think the internet will be a much better place, just need to remember that non technical and political people also exist and should not be treated as second class citizens on here, y’all kinda need those folks or your gonna be forever niche and unviable and nothings gonna change, I seriously hope things get better on here, cause everything sucks right now, online, irl, literally everywhere all at once with no serious alternatives to anything, I yearn for the past so badly 😔

  • Hey there! Yes please, I’d deeply appreciate that! And thank you for the effort of all this, I’ll go check it out right now!

I also heard there’s a community here called “communitypromo” or something that people sometimes refer to, maybe try posting there and see if it helps attract more people to your community? No clue how effective it is though, but can’t hurt to try I guess!

  • Oh damn, an old school internet forum? Is that one any good?

I get you, but there just doesn’t seem to be much of a crowd here for anything but politics and tech in the first place, same for the whole of the fediverse tbh, the few people that have tried hosting more “normie” communities here on lemmy always fizzle out, I saw a community where it’s just one person posting by themselves and at most they get a few comments and that’s about it, most of the time they don’t get anything beyond some upvotes and downvotes, things don’t seem to go anywhere here unless your preaching to the existing choir, so not sure how I or you would be any different in that regard, this is the only mental health/safe space community on here that’s even remotely populated and it’s not even close to the amount of the tech and political stuff.

If people here cared about this stuff then I think some of them would’ve already tried all of this, wouldn’t they? Again the few that’ve tried fizzle out very quickly and move on, people here seem generally content with things as they to the detriment of us causals trying to escape the usual social media platforms, not many “normies” here it seems, so no idea how you’d even get a ball rolling when there’s no audience for it here beyond like, maybe 4 people or something at best lol.

It’s a chicken and the egg sorta situation, there’s not many active normal communities here because there’s not many normal people around, and because of that no normal person will want to come here unless they literally have no choice, and so you get an echo chamber of like, 2 topics and not much else, with an audience that’s totally fine with that but puts normies off even more as a result, so how exactly do you break that cycle? Copy and pasting open ended questions somewhere here might not do anything if there’s no one around interested in it in the first place, I’m a nobody so I don’t know much about how to go about this exactly, this stuffs beyond my capabilities, but so far mastodon was the closest we got to something niche turning mainstream, and even then it didn’t really go anywhere for long before people just ended up flocking to bluesky if they even bothered leaving twitter, people already know what they want and want to only stay with that, very difficult to overcome or change that it seems.

Though don’t get me wrong with all this rambling, not against it at all obviously by my presence here alone, I’d love to stick on lemmy and actually use it as a viable alternative to reddit (I’m hoping for it infact). You can go for it if you want, I’m not objecting, just being honest and saying that it’s an uphill battle from my perspective as someone looking at all of this from a causal perspective, so personally I’d rather just be in preexisting groups and communities then play the long “host a community about a very neglected topic and hope people give a damn” game in a niche environment that already has it’s priorities set, don’t think I have that energy in me tbh, also, I feel like it’s a bad idea for a “mentally ill” person to be in a leading/authority role, but that’s just me. I envy those who managed to catch the train and into those private support groups, cause this sucks out here, goddamn…

  • Hey there, thanks for the reply. Either is fine honestly, or both, whatevers out there these days that doesn’t suck. Though that one is completely dead unfortunately, no activity on it.

There’s barely anything here on lemmy from browsing around for a while tbh, so I’ll take anything else outside of it if possible or if anyone knows anything.

I’m assuming by that last statement that you don’t know anything personally? Or are you implying that there’s legit just nothing out there anymore if you don’t already have your group?
