Right before October 7th, Israel was in the midst of a huge political upheaval because of the looming judicial overhaul. Gantz was the leader of the opposition, and the main political rival of Netanyahu. The country was extremely divided, almost verging on civil war.

Right after October 7th, Israelis were focused on unity, survival, and combatting Hamas, Hezbollah, and other threats.

Gantz joined the war cabinet mostly to signal that whatever disagreements he and his party have with Netanyahu [of which there are many], he still prioritizes national unity in the face of existential threat.

This unity was fragile, and by now the political infighting in Israel is back in full swing.

It’s worth supplementing this with his earlier statement from 2 days ago:

“Ukraine condemns Iran’s attack on Israel using ‘Shahed’ drones and missiles. We in Ukraine know very well the horror of similar attacks by Russia, which uses the same ‘Shahed’ drones and Russian missiles, the same tactics of mass air strikes,”

“It is critical that the United States Congress make the necessary decisions to strengthen America’s allies at this critical time,” he says.

Another part of the answer is geographical. Jordan helped Israel intercept because their airspace is between Iran and Israel.

The distance between Russia and Ukraine is far shorter.

The entire world witnessed allied action in the skies above Israel and neighboring countries. It demonstrated how truly effective unity in defending against terror can be when it is based on sufficient political will.

Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Jordan acted together and with maximum efficiency.

European skies could have received the same level of protection long ago if Ukraine had received similar full support from its partners in intercepting drones and missiles. Terror must be defeated completely and everywhere, not more in some places and less in others.

I thank everyone in the world, every leader and state, who truly assists us with air defense and missiles necessary to protect our skies, as well as training our pilots on F-16s. All of this already works and will continue to work to save lives.

However, we can now see how unity can work truly a hundred percent, and how almost a hundred percent of “Shaheds” and missiles can be intercepted. We will discuss it with our partners.

It’s pretty likely that at least some are still alive, since they were probably held in the Hamas tunnels under Gaza, safe from bombs.

It’s been 17 days since Hamas launched its horrific attack against Israel, killing over 1,400 Israeli citizens, including defenseless women, children and the elderly. In the aftermath of such unspeakable brutality, the U.S. government and the American people have shared in the grief of families, prayed for the return of loved ones, and rightly declared solidarity with the Israeli people. As stated in an earlier post, Israel has a right to defend its citizens against such wanton violence, and fully support President Biden’s call for the United States to support our long-time ally in going after Hamas, dismantling its military capabilities, and facilitating the safe return of hundreds of hostages to their families. But even as we support Israel, we should also be clear that how Israel prosecutes this fight against Hamas matters. In particular, it matters - as President Biden has repeatedly emphasized - that lsrael’s military strategy abides by international law, including those laws that seek to avoid, to every extent possible, the death or suffering of civilian populations. Upholding these values is important for its own sake because it is morally just and reflects our belief in the inherent value of every human life. Keep in mind they did this even before the Israeli army responded in any way and did anything in Gaza.

Cheering on the terrorist attach in October 7th that killed thousands of innocents is a call for violence against Israel.

I want to highlight two things from the article:

cases of students who published words of praise for terrorism

people being summoned to police investigations or questioning simply for “liking” posts on social media — including an Arab teacher working in Tiberias who was suspended because she liked a post shared by the Instagram page Eye on Palestine

I wish the article would put some more emphasis in distinguishing legitimate criticism of Israel’s actions on the one hand (which should be considerd protected speech), and incitement to violence and terrorism on the other (which should rightfully be persecuted and banned)

Israel is at war right now, and this causes Israeli instituations to drastically overextend their definition of what constitutes “incitement to violence” and “supporting terrorism”.

We must be able understand the nuances and hold Israel accountable for quashing legitimate speech, while still understanding their duty to prevent incitement to violence, which inevitably leads to real violence.

These same criticisms and nuances should also be directed at Palestinian institutions.
