Would also like to know this. The communication is terrible. Is @[email protected] part of feddit.uk or separate? This is what I meant when I said it should be “well and truly distanced” from this instance. Somebody else needs to set up the UK instance, not be reliant on what ever Flaky Tom decrees. I’m not in the position to step up, and perhaps nobody is - but please could people honestly communicate that so we can look for alternatives?
I feel like I gently warned about this during the process, relying on an inactive admin always seemed like a bad idea. I hoped it was taken care of and that somebody else was assigned console access but no assurance was provided, no explanation as to what the actual situation was, so I left here for another instance. Turns out my fears were true and I’m glad I didn’t waste any more time here.
I have no idea why folk were so eager for Tom to turn back up again, why that was a source of any delay, or any reason to change plans for “Quackhouse” once they were in advanced stages.
I feel like all this has really crushed what was a promising UK community on Lemmy, a double-blow now, and I hope any new instance that appears is well and truly distanced from this one.
It’s also not best security practice to leave an inactive user with admin powers which still seems to be the case here.
I don’t want to say anything inflammatory since something terrible might have happened to Tom that we don’t know - but it’s definitely not OK to start a community like this, get everyone on-board and established, then fail to appoint admins and disappear without explanation (even if busy) leaving other people to pick up the pieces, unless there’s a very good reason.
And to be honest I’m surprised I seem to be the only one saying that - maybe an explanation from him (if appropriate to share) would smooth things over. I was genuinely excited about the new instance as an opportunity for the UK communities on Lemmy to put a bad situation behind us and move on.
I already moved 25 days ago when it became clear it was abandoned. The decision is whether to come back, I hoped I would despite my small complaint, but your comment isn’t exactly making me feel any warmer here…
Hmm, I have mixed feelings about this, honestly, I’m not going to grumble too much because I’m not the one putting in the work - but it felt like a bit of a let-down that all this happened in the first place, and it felt like a fresh start was needed to move on.
Thanks to all the people working on saving the day! I’ve taken a break from the instance for the time being because of the uncertainty but looking forward to, hopefully, joining you on wave 3.

That’s a good interview but what about it brought it to mind with 6.5?
It was ~20 years ago so my advice to myself then would be pretty irrelevant now. I messed up my laptop, and my advice then would have been don’t start with a laptop (because laptop compatibility was lacking back then compared to desktop, different times).
First of all I wouldn’t use a pre-installed OS (I would always wipe and install my own for security reasons).
Secondly: Thinkpads (at least when I bought mine, last year) let you buy them without an OS and don’t charge you for it.
Thirdly: the linked manufacturers above tend to be either US-centric and/or more expensive than Thinkpads.
Balance doesn’t mean giving equal platform to every racist bigot though, there has to be a line drawn somewhere. Wikipedia doesn’t accept the Mail as a source, personally I don’t think it should be accepted here.
Not for me it isn’t, smartphones and tablets have always been a horrible user experience (and I’m always bewildered by stories about them replacing desktop/laptops for people), I only have a smartphone out of social pressure, making them even worse is going to drive me away further.
Is it not disgraceful that you have to use a trick so some third party company doesn’t install software you don’t want on your hardware? I think that’s appalling!
