  • That implies that the others have got complete maps - which I find much more surprising. Every time that I have had any dealings with any utility companies - which I do as part of my job - it becomes apparent very early on that they don’t have anything like accurate maps in whatever area I am looking at. And not just for old lines that they inherited - as seems to be the issue here - but for things like fibre optics that I saw them lay myself just 18 months earlier.

So this is hovering around the -2 votes so far. And I imagine that the downvotes are from people who didn’t watch and were taken in by the title.

If the same thing had been in a four-panel cartoon or a screenshot of text or whatever, it would be raking the upvotes in.

  • I’ve had 17 days off in total, using up leave. That was great, but came back this week hoping for a slow start while I actually remembered anything at all about what I am supposed to be getting paid for.

Oh no, not a chance: “Update your budgets by the end of the day!” “Deal with this damage caused by Henk!”, “Your contractors haven’t been paid by accounts, so won’t come out and do anything. Sort it out!”, “We’re auditing your climate actions - update them now!”, “Do your team’s PDRs!” etc etc.

  • The article goes on to talk about research into suitable species for various climates and soil types etc.

Well, I am sure that we can always learn more, but arboriculturists and foresters have been doing this literally for centuries. There are very well known species lists precisely for this kind of work, and if we are talking about native species, particularly, then anyone who has been working in these fields will know them off the top of their heads. It us not exactly difficult or cutting edge.

  • Whilst I am sympathetic to the overall aim of this, things like this:

She would have expected people to name figures such as Quintus Lollius Urbicus, who became governor of Roman Britain

…do stand out as being a a bit unrealisitic. I mean, how many governors of Roman Britain of any race or nationality can the typical Briton actually name? I’d be surprised if it was more than 1 and probably less than that.

And if the expectation is that anyone would know of this guy only because his chief contribution to history is “being black” then I am not sure what we are gaining here.

  • I have a day off tomorrow and will be spending most of tramping through dense and wet woodland dormouse surveying (unless it is actually raining: we make sure that we don’t get the mice wet). That gets fairly tiring after a while so the evening will just be pizza and TV with my SO - probably Lower Decks, an old Parks and Rec and For All Mankind, then under the duvet and reading for the rest of the evening.

So, yep, really living it up.

Just Extra Mature Cheddar and some Parmigiano Regiano at the moment - and that is fairly typical except for high days and holidays. I might occasionally have some Cambozola or Brie and maybe some Emmental or Gruyere - and maybe the cheddar will be Green Thunder, or maybe not cheddar at all but Lincolnshire Poacher, but I seldom have more than that except for when I am on holiday or for Samhain or the solstice etc.
