  • OK, slow down there, pardner.

First off, advertising data is already used to do this. The WH app probably doesn’t really provide anything new that the CCP can’t already buy, the same way the USG buys ad data to track both Americans and non-Americans alike in violation of spirit of the 4th Amendment. The app might be vulnerable to targeted attacks and zero days, as everything made by this administration is twice as expensive and a quarter as good as what’s available to the general public because corruption is the only metric for success with them.

Second, if it’s a classified device, then (using the DOD as a proxy) the WH app isn’t secure enough to be allowed as installed because it wouldn’t pass NSA vetting because it is an attack surface for targeted hacks. Meaning that nothing beyond emails that are FOIAable anyway are on the devices.

Third, real life isn’t movies. Calm down, Liam Neeson.

  • Can’t speak to McDonald’s, but I can for KFC.

KFC outside the US is great. Genuinely good and typically not the cheapest food, but not pricey. In some places it’s just original recipe (which is fairly crispy) and spicy.

In the US it’s fully disgusting. Top to bottom, everything is gross, and it’s not cheap enough to be so gross. I would rather skip a meal than eat KFC in the US. But KFC anywhere in Africa is on par with the excitement of a Nando’s - guaranteed good food ahead.

Last time I had McDonald’s at all was 2007 in Morocco and it made me feel gross, so I haven’t touched it since.

  • The question isn’t if you’re useful to Lemmy or not. We don’t deserve to exert any weight on your heart with opinions and upvotes.

Are you doing something you think is worth your time, with or without external validation? Is this something you would do if you thought it was basically the internet version of putting messages in a bottle?

When you are old and on your death bed, what will the value of your reddit karma be? What is the value of it now?

Do things that matter to you. Do things that help you grow and be a better person.

  • It’s always kind of funny when the Technology folks wade into well-researched and well-worn Privacy territory.

Do you want to not wave a giant flag of your activity to Google, Meta, MS, and your ISP when you do literally anything online? Either use a VPN and Mullvad (or Librewolf, but YMMV) browser, OR a VPN and Tor OR Tor with an https bridge if paying for a VPN will make you a target (Tor bridges are not for casuals, save them for those in genuine need).

VPN locations need to be changed. Frequently. Router level VPN at home becomes your “This is me” location, then make use of VPNs on each device when you want an extra layer of obfuscation.

There’s not a lot of middle ground at this point, and it’s not difficult.
