  • From a product development viewpoint, the gun is an uninteresting part. It’s better to use something that already has a mature production line and has been thoroughly field tested. It’s the vision and control systems they are interested in developing, the gun is just the chosen end effector for this application.

Even when they’re ready to start deploying systems like this, there’s a lot of value in using compenents that the military already has a lot of spare parts for and that personnel know how to maintain. I wouldn’t expect a custom gun until units like this are commonplace.

  • Yeah, ten years ago any apartment complex near campus that had undergone any renovations within the prior 15 years was being marketed as “luxury.”

Most of them were still cramped places with terrible materials and paper thin walls. The students living in them were frequently heavily dependent of financial aid or their parents had saved diligently for 20 yrs. There were some “elites,” but most of them were international students.

  • No, never. Current charging rates already get close to thermal constraints. Hitting those charging rates either requires accepting much lower power density or using way more metal per cell. This research might inform design changes to improve charging rates, but we’ll never see high capacity batteries charging in a minute.

The researchers know this and only mention wearables and iot devices applications. The article author erroneously makes the leap to high energy density devices.

If you don’t care about energy density at all, ceramic capacitors can already charge and discharge in microseconds.

I have a combination washer/dryer unit. It doesn’t do a great job at drying, but it does remove enough of the moisture that it takes a couple days to get musty. It’s nice that I can just stick a load in before bed, and besides wrinkles, there’s no problem with me not getting to it for a day.

The combo units have tiny drums and take longer than separate units. They wouldn’t be suitable for a family with kids, but for just two people It’s been pretty convenient.

  • Other countries should also be looking at adding forest area and wetlands in a strategic fashion to improve freshwater retention. Deforesting clearly changes local climates. So we should be able to do the reverse as well.

Historical accounts make it sound like the vast majority of land east of the Mississippi in the US used to be old growth forest. Between the chestnut blight and over 200 years of logging, most of the old growth forest is gone.

India has had some notable successes with a grassroots movement to get rural communities to do small earthworks projects to colllect water during the rainy season and let it seep into the ground. They have demonstrated a notable reduction in crop failures during the dry season resulting from the community action.
