Who cares? Just like most things your average programmer relies on, they are written by smarter or at least more specialised people to make your job easier. They have learned to write memory-safe code so you don’t have to.

Back on reddit, I mostly interacted with communities relating to JRPGs. There are some communities over here, but at most they post some trailers every now and then. There are also some more focussd communities about Dragon Quest, Xenoblade or SMT - all of them practically dead. I don’t think there is an instance.

I could go over to a programming related one, the german instance or even one of the vegan instances for secondary ‘interests’, but those aren’t things I often find myself posting about online to be honest. They seem to be mostly about memes anyways.

Unfortunately, there is no instance matching my interests. There are a number of communities across different instances, but it seems like several people tried to make their own, didn’t interact with each other and all of them are long dead.

Once I find such an instance, I’ll switch over. I’ve been meaning to leave .world anyways.

While I do agree with the problems identified, I can’t help but think they also made forums a lot better. Due to the lower discoverability and higher effort to actually join communities felt more personal. You interacted with smaller groups and came to know specific people. I still have friends from back then.

On larger platforms, I never had that. Even lemmy, which is small in comparison has enough people that I barely even think about specific users. Let alone speak with them on a personal level.

While they most certainly suck, so do most other people. As long as there will be a secondary market online someone will scalp tickets. Whether that’s some random asshole or these organized assholes hardly matters in most cases.

Of course with random assholes doing the scalping there is still a chance to get a cheap one by being faster, albeit a very slim one.

Maybe, but I think it will remain more popular than before. Let’s say there are 10% of people in any given group who would theoretically believe bullshit - the number is chosen randomly. Thanks to stuff like TikTok they are way more likely to come into contact with lots of different bullshit to believe in than ever before.

Kind of like how Republicans would be more popular if everyone would watch Fox News every day.

Kind of? I remember a statistic about pseudo-science being more popular with younger generations. Energy healing, healing stones and all that other homeopathic bullshit. Assuming that is indeed correct, Flat Earth is likely more popular too.

It probably does okay simply by virtue of being so stupid, there aren’t many people in their right mind producing videos about the earth being round to drown them out.

The kernel is probably too large to rewrite the whole thing at once. This could lead to a future without any new C kernel devs, leading to stagnation, while the Rust kernel could be many years away from being finished. (Assuming we actually move away from C.)

At that point you might as well just start an entirely new kernel and hope it is good enough to eventually replace the Linux one once all devs are gone. Kinda the X11 and wayland thing.

It’s quite logical even. Right-wing answers are short, simple and spoken with certainty. That’s great for a half-minute clip. Answers grounded in reality are complex, require proof and have some uncertainty. That’s not gonna fit in there, or, at the very least, you need an outstanding communicator.

No matter the age, most people stick just with what they hear most often.

That’s probably the main reason to reason to ban AI. They want a mostly clean training set and they will probably add their own AI answers to each question as well.

Also, each satelite that burns up upon re-entry isn’t just gone - it still introduces vaporized materials into the upper atmosphere.

That’s what happens if you only care about engagement. Chauvinism of any kind is liked by a certain amount of people and despised by the rest of us - both positions drive engagement.

I can get behind the logic of more screen time probably meaning less physical activity. But someone needs to explain to me how eating less would ever lead to weight gain. Especially when your typical breakfast junk is just as unhealthy as snacking could ever be.

That’s not actually all that surprising. The far-right, at least in Germany, is far more prominent on social media. It sucks but I don’t think we can prevent that. We have a lot of complex problems but social media favors short answers instead of complex ones. A lot of younger people simply lack the critical thinking to see these simple answers for what they are - bullshit. And I can’t blame them, they have been exposed to this bullshit for most of their lives.

I’m surprised you needed to research that. How else would Turkey magically increase their oil exports that much? I assume people simply didn’t care. They had their symbolic ban and didn’t need to decrease their oil consumption.

The main draw of xmonad is that you can modify pretty much everything, as the config itself is a Haskell file (the entire thing is written in Haskell). There are tonnes of modules to use, you can define your own window layouts and add whatever functions you can dream off - I haven’t seen any other window manager offer this kind of freedom (with the added joy of learning Haskell!).

As for the second point, about half a year ago, they started doing exactly this. Rewriting xmonad for Wayland. Guess I’ll sit this one out.

I just set up xmonad because I was in the mood for change. Took about a week of tinkering a bit each day and I really like it. Afterwards, I was still in the mood for configs and looked at Wayland. There isn’t much progress on Wayland xmonad, so guess that has to wait.

That’s a common problem I’ve been hearing for almost 10 now - the software support isn’t quite there yet.

I have nothing but respect for people risking their lifes to fend off Russia. It is probably more important than any individual life.

That being said, I have nothing but sympathy for any draft-dodger. I couldn’t imagine fighting in a war and I myself would hide as well. That may change if I’d have kids, but even still, I would never wish upon anyone to be forcefully drafted.

I’d be just as happy with one trillion as I’d be with one billion.

I’d be a lot happier with one million than I’d be with one thousand.

I’d say the cap for happiness for me personally is somewehere between 10 and 50 million dollar. Enough to never think about money again.

I feel like the hype already died down quite some time ago. I know a few people who made an account, but this is the first time I heard the site mentioned this year. Same with Threads.
