I have that same laptop, and it sounds perfect for what you want. Cheap, repairable, and runs linux well.

I used syncthing for a while. Then tried github with mostly terrible results. Now i’m back on syncthing. It involves a little bit of setup, but i mostly forget about it now. It just works.
I don’t follow any best practices. AUR, updates without checking the feed, etc. Been on arch for 2 years or so without any major issues.
Two days ago I decided to give hyprland a try just for some excitement. Lol.
You can use the archinstall script and get it setup in however long it takes to install everything.
I recently went through the process of manually setting up hyprland. Only after finding out it was added to archinstall…
My laptops and RPis aren’t named anything interesting. My server is named Lyla though. I let my youngest kid pick the name.
I got this same email. Of course the only domains I own are .com and .xyz. Going to lock in as many years as I can before September.
I finally started looking into emulating on my phone, so I’ve been playing some games from my childhood. Mostly Alleyway and Pokemon Red, with a little Harvest Moon thrown in.
I’ve been selfhosting for almost a year, and I’m still on the lookout for anything I can host.
I’ve reached a point where if I don’t have a use for something, i’ll still try to make an unraid template if there isn’t one. Just to install it and try it out. Lol
I want that router, but I don’t have a good reason to give my wife why our RB4011 needs to be upgraded…lol
You may feel like you’re doing fine now but there may be a point where things change and your capacity is reduced. This is where knowing you’re neurodivergent can be helpful
Thank you for this! My GP doesn’t think I have ADHD because I can hold down a job. He asked me at my last appointment, “So, you still want to try and get on ADHD meds?”
I didn’t know how to word that I don’t just want a diagnosis for meds. I want to know what I’m working with so I can get whatever help I need, when I need it.
Extremely simple! It’s literally just a few screws and unplug the old one and put in the new. Took all of 10 minutes and at least half of that was trying to find my small screwdriver bits. Lol
My use case sounds similar to yours, so I’d second the T480. I got one 7-8 months ago, and it’s been great so far. Only thing I changed was I put in a backlit keyboard.
I don’t know any general laptop communities. At leasr not ones with any activity, but [email protected] seems relatively active.
If you ever need to find a community, https://lemmyverse.net/communities is a decent place to start.
I’m still procrastinating on figuring out the majority of my backup solution, mainly because I get overwhelmed too. But there is a backblaze personal docker template on the Unraid Community App store. You could do one way syncthing and have that backup to backblaze.
The only thing I currently backup offsite is an encrypted archive of my paperless-ngx content. I use rclone for that.
I found this guide on reddit that goes over borg and rclone. Seems to walk you through most of it. https://www.reddit.com/r/unRAID/comments/e6l4x6/tutorial_borg_rclone_v2_the_best_method_to/
But, i’m also making assumptions on your technical abilities, which I guess is part of the problem you have with cli tools…
I use Yakuake and Konsole since they came along with KDE Plasma. I’ve never really thought about using anything else, but maybe I should…
I’ve got a Mikrotik RB4011, and I couldn’t be happier with it. It definitely has a learning curve, but once I got it setup how I want, it just works. I’m sure some other options have the same feature, but one of my favorite things is a script I have run every night that emails me a backup.
I’ve only ever had to use it a few times, but having a recent backup of my router on hand all the time is nice.
Almost every time I use Windows, i hit F12 to try and pull down Yakuake to do something quick, and I get annoyed every time. Now that i’m more comfortable with it, the terminal is just better for a lot of things.
This is the exact setup I use and it works great!
Yes, I haven’t come across any apps so far that didn’t work. Performance is an issue with some apps, but nothing major.
I have the Leaf 2 and like it a lot. Can be a little slow sometimes, but nothing worse than any other ereader I’ve used.
It’s just way faster for me most of the time. I can hit F12, do what I need, and be done without messing around with a mouse or touchpad.
