Microsoft raises on interoperability and ergonomics and no bullshit, then starts making it so that nobody after it could. Google raises on the web being open and interoperable and standard, then starts making it so that nobody after it could. Facebook … was always crap, but its initial advantage was being populated by real people and not bots, the same.
Ladder kicking is really a good metaphor for many things that happened in the last 30 years.
