I am a grumpy old man that is/was pissed that we aren’t getting a “real” Baldurs Gate 3, but as it gets close to release I am sadly getting excited about it.

Has anyone played Early Access on the Steam Deck? Is it fun/playable on there? I do nearly 100% of my gaming on that now and barely touch my dedicated gaming Ubuntu machine these days.

According to protondb.com BG3 should run okay-ish on the Steam Deck, but with some tweaks. Just from a glance it looks like people skip the launcher after initial setup and lock the fps to 30-40ish. You can find more details here:

My man. Post the name instead of some random acronym that could be applied to about a million games. No one actually knows what you’re talking about.

Anyone that thought Baldur’s Gate 3 would just automatically release on Linux because it was releasing on Stadia was just delusional. Larian Studios didn’t even support Linux with Divinity Original Sin 2 despite supporting Linux with Divinity Original Sin… why? because they learned their lesson which is:

The biggest issue with releasing any software on a particular platform is whether there is enough potential revenue to make a profit over development and support costs. The only reason BG3 was announced for Stadia was because it had the backing of Google and could deliver up-front revenue to help offset any cost concerns while Larian worked on developing and supporting for Stadia, a fixed platform, that had a finite support structure.

If Stadia did well, larian studios might have released BG3 on Linux, but when Stadia tanked, so did any idea of there being any hope of a release for general Linux.

The early access is completely playable in Linux so it will work on the Steam Deck. Whether you’d want to play it on the Steam Deck due to its lack of native gamepad controls is another issue.

Yes it works if can confirm after first launch you have to login in with a larian account in the launcher but after that you can add the launcher skip flag in the launch optuons and go straight into the game.

Previous Larion Studios games work on Linux, so even if it’s flaky on launch, I suspect it won’t be long before it starts working well

Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access has already been working extremely well on Linux for the past few years while it was in development, so this combined with what you mentioned about their previous track record, I’d say we’ll be getting day one playability in Proton.

There was a video when the Steam Deck was announced with the Larian CEO playing on a Steam Deck and being blown away by it, he mentioned that they would make sure it rund via proton on the deck.

Also BG3 was one of the games that was used in the video marketing and screen shots for the Steam Deck so I’m confident Valve will be putting their best efforts to work with Larian on this
