I could probably find a thousand things you spend your money on that hurt people in some way, but I’m not going to hold you to that insane standard because I don’t believe in ideological purity tests

Call it caring fatigue. There are causes that I care about and that I spend my time and energy on. But over the course of 2020-2025, every little thing-of-the-week issue that popped up demanded that I stop buying socks at target, or burritos at chipotle, canned beans or pens or video games or cloud services or t-shirts or shoes or plastic cups or what have you. I just don’t have it in me to pretend to care about everything that everybody else cares about all the time. I’m picking my 2-3 things and sticking with them
I personally love being married
I think a person can be a pacifist, I don’t think a country can
I’m kind of done with my boycott era
There’s nothing interesting about it. It’s a waste of storage space and computational power. It makes the world worse
.ml should be defederated from lemmy.world tbh
Windows has a terminal now too!
Recently I’ve started working on coding a forum. I want to add in all the classic features of early 2000s/early 2010s forums like PhPBB and such. The goal would be to have no javascript at all

Only way to get hired with your credentials is with some serious networking. In your local area, look for code/tech meetups and talk with people. Look for “Code and Coffee” on meetup or facebook or something (though I must warn against caffeine consumption for teenagers!). You’ll most likely have to look for an internship rather than a Junior Dev position at first, which is typically the pipeline that companies use to hire Jr Engineers.
Another option is to look for “Tier 3 support” or “Integrations engineers”. Often, companies will look for people with minor coding skills to work directly with clients to help implement the company product for the client (for example, adding some custom widget to their wordpress site, new features for their salesforce instance, etc.)
These engineers don’t create the company product but they do get some experience scripting things and often they can use this position to transition to a full time engineering role. In my experience, these roles have far lower requirements to entry
I’m also a software engineer and I can’t stand most other people in this field. I got into this field because I love computers and was tweaking garry’s mod scripts when I was 12. I read scifi books and enjoy reading about the lore of the tech industry.
I would estimate that AT LEAST 75% of people in this industry are ladder climbing yuppies who got into it for the money. The gym rat, tesla-driving podcaster types who have invented their own language about syncing up, achieving alignment, creating action items and eating dog food. And for some reason they’re all into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Lex Fridman/Joe Rogan
I do not socialize with my coworkers because they are the most obnoxious fucking money-obsessed pieces of shit I’ve ever met
Do older technical people use 1:1 chat? I would think email is more common
What’s a good alternative to discord? Matrix seems ok
I figured I could balance some of the other factors (low maintenance cost, higher principle, higher interest) against each other to get a lower monthly payment
The car runs fine, I don’t have any major complaints other than the stupid ass touch screen controls for stuff like air conditioning, but it seems hard to find any car that has real controls anymore.
I also moved to a city (from the suburbs) and work remotely so I don’t drive as much as I used to
I don’t know what current car interest rates are. I can tell you that the federal reserve has not changed interest rates in a meaningful way since then
Irc isn’t the competitor of xmpp. Discord is
There are people using xmpp? Last time I set up a server and tried using it with Pidgin, I couldn’t find a soul that used it
I’m not giving up, I’m just going to focus on the issues that are personally important to me
