Before Thatcherism introduced the idea that everyone should own a home, council housing was there to provide a good home to anyone who wanted it. Affordable rent, modern amenities and upkeep, as well as the ability to pass the tenancy of the home to your children. If you needed or wanted to move area, another council house should be available for you. The concept was amazing. Then the notion was ingrained in the culture that people had to own their own homes, the councils were forced to sell their housing stock cheaply, given no money to replace it and, voilà, we have todays housing market.
