No, we are perfectly fine at reading. We just don’t accept the bullshit excuses as cover anymore.

Unfortunately there are too many people who dog whistle online. When they are called out, they claim they were sarcastic or trolling and “why can’t you take a joke?”. It can make many of us quite reactive to it.
Given how much of today’s political hell grew out of “jokes”, it’s akin to walking into a veteran’s PTSD support group and firing off a cap gun. There are grounds where it could be a funny prank, but it’s 100% on you to not cross the line.
Was lunch included?
Hopefully they will be careful. A single, well documented attack on civilians would justify a LOT of retaliatory strikes on Ukraine civilians (in Russian eyes).
Taking out the troops/equipment during the parade, without hitting civilians, that would send a message.
It’s a terrifying mix of a Gish gallop (a stampede of lies and half truths, delivered so fast they can’t be countered) and razzle dazzle (camouflage via a swarm of irrelevant or counter intuitive points).
It’s terrifyingly effective, and very difficult to counter.
Don’t get me wrong, 90%+ who have one really don’t need one. I’m not arguing with that.
The acid test is how dirty it is. If it’s always ultra shiny, it’s an ego prosthetic. If it’s regularly mud splattered etc, it’s more likely to be legit.
European pick-ups do have a place. You need to have to both tow, and go off-road regularly. Basically, horse owners, farmers, and some areas of construction. American pick-ups are just obscenely big, and completely inappropriate for almost all uses.
A van wins in almost all cases, except off-road performance. Vans are hilariously bad at that.
Apparently it’s a bit of a running joke on maternity wards. People pay for private treatment. However, as soon as there is a serious issue, they are rushed to the same NHS doctors as everyone else. Basically all you pay extra for is a nicer room, and nurses playing maid (or maids playing nurse, depending).
Idiot teen is an explanation, not a dismissal. Nowhere did I say to ignore it. My point is that there is a gradient of both crimes and intents. If there is no matching gradient in legal response, then it can lead to injustice.
An idiotic crime will often need fairly minor corrections. A malicious crime requires FAR more of a response. Treating all crimes as malicious ends up diluting the view on truly malicious crimes. It can also drive individuals into the very situation you want to move them away from.
Context matters a lot. However, in general, it’s a far lower crime than many in that category. Critically, it’s not of the level to be desirable to destroy their future over. The punishment should be enough to deter and correct, but not more.
Many/most of us have been idiotic teens before. Society’s goal should be to correct and improve. Not go in with sledgehammers aimed at skulls. In many cases, the embarrassment alone would be enough to do the job. The law just needs to drive that point home.
It would limit watering down the register with ‘minor’ offenses. It would also help avoid trapping an idiot teen in a negative spiral, due to a stupid drunken mistake 10 years previously.
Proof has a different meaning in science, compared to layman usage. In science it means absolute proof, and so generally only applies to mathematics.
A good counter example is Newtonian physics. It has/had a massive amount of experimental evidence behind it. It was basically proven. Then a few slight mismatches were found. Those led to both quantum mechanics and relativity. Both disproved Newtonian physics.
As for germ theory. It’s technically been disproven by the existence of viruses, and prions. Both cause infections without germs being involved.
None of that makes germ theory much less useful, just not “proven” in scientific terms.
Apparently, when women first started as police officers, in the UK, they were paired up with male officers. The logic being that the man can provide muscle, if needed.
It’s now been found that 2 women officers are far more effective, particularly with drunk men. A male officer can restrain them. A female officer can talk them into coming quietly.
Oh, and the UK police were the first to “raise concerns” when the government suggested arming beat officers with guns. They did NOT want to be armed.
Basically, it’s perfectly possible to police primarily by consent, and get the job done.
Modern society is making both mild autism and ADHD more obvious. It both brings out traits associated with them, and makes it more acceptable to have them and not mask completely.
As for cancer, that’s mostly an age and treatment thing. People with cancer live longer, due to treatment, so you hear far more about it. Also, if you live longer, you get cancer. Therefore an older population has more cancer cases.
My personal concern is neurological and plastics. People with degenerative neurological conditions tend to have more micro plastics in their brains. We’ve no idea of the long term implications of this. It could possibly be the modern equivalent of leaded petrol.
The allied forces explicitly decided not to try assassinating Hitler. They were worried someone more competent would take his place.
There’s definitely a difference between rural and urban requirements.
Analogue goes further, and can tolerate more interference.
Open channels allow others to jump on quickly. E.g. a hunter/hiker listening in, can jump in with critical information on a search and rescue.
Lower density means less people to mess with channels, and generally better radio etiquette.
Open radios are cheaper, and already have the required infrastructure.
Basically, it’s not worth the cost/effort to upgrade. It also provides some extra benefits.
True, but they weren’t really used much as flying cars till later. I might be wrong on exactly when they moved from military to “rich transport to the race track”, however.
We’ve had flying cars since the 70s, they are called helicopters.
The issue with a flying car for general use, is one of maintenance and safety. If an older car breaks down, it causes a tailback. If a flying car breaks down, it could demolish a school. The higher standards required means higher costs. That means rich people only. The rich use helicopters in exactly that manner.
This is one of the biggest frustrations with nuclear power. The first power plants had issues (mostly due to them being bomb factory designs). We learnt from that, and designed better ones. They never got built. They were swamped in red tape and delays until they died.
Decades later, China comes in and just asks nicely. The designs work fine. China now leads the way, built on research we left to rot.
It’s also worth noting that there is a big difference between a fusion power plant and a fission one. China is doing active research on it, as is the west. There’s quite a friendly rivalry going on. We have also basically cracked fusion now. We just need to scale it up. The only big problem left is the tokamakite issue. The neutron radiation put off by the reaction transmutes the walls. Using radioactive materials as a buffer is an idea I’ve not heard of. I’m curious about the end products. A big selling point of fusion is the lack of long term waste. Putting a fission reaction in there too might lose that benefit.
Perfect is the enemy of good.
I suspect paradox are just taking a fuck you attitude here, but that’s a separate point.
Like it or not, Linux is a very small part of the gaming ecosystem. We also now have proton, that makes it far less of an issue.
Give all this, I would rather a reliable windows version, with an eye towards not fucking over the proton translation. Any Linux version would likely lack a lot of bug testing etc.
The goal is a stable fast game that runs on Linux. How that is achieved is almost irrelevant. At this point, asking them to play nice with our translation layer is the best option.
