so ive deep dived into as much information as i can find. the TLDR is the main dev LongPanda supposedly went on a vacation to china (most likely his home country?) to which there is conflicting information on his return. one path is he make a lemmy account 9hours ago and made a message that doesn’t describe the blob and sound like a gpt response. to which his "irl friend made an account 3 hours ago to comment that he hasnt heard from LongPanda in months. both were removed from lemmy.ml because of suspected impersonation. the other side of the coin is the LongPanda is still gone and hasn’t addressed the blobs. after looking thought the documentation, you can build from source. in the instructions it says "5. Binaries
There some binaries in Ventoy install package. These files are downloaded from other open source project’s website, such as busybox."
i am not a programer but in the source build it lists the blobs and were there from supposedly from other FOSS projects with sha256’s. so theoretically you should be able to verify the blobs, with the sha256.

UmU notices your windows software
I havent used a pico before but i have flashed a t440p with skulls(precompiled libreboot) i originally bought a pamona clip knockoff and flasher. But then made a lemmy post, and lots of people recommend using a raspberry pi, so i got a pi4 and in the event you brick it, you can backup the original bios before flashing. It was a bit finicky even with the pi but eventually got it to work!
Probably not that helpful, but i do know of a few articles installing linux on a Chromecast
its flat theme
i think i may go with wire guard, do you know of any good videos or tutorials? i found this, https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-wireguard-on-ubuntu-20-04
also follow up question, alot of people are saying to make the mine-craft server run in a vm for host isolation. So what if i spun up 2vm’s
#1 would be a virtualized instance of pf sense, i would then have ethernet 1 on dogtown give internet to the base gentoo install, then have a Ethernet 2 go into PF sense, which will then have firewall rules to restrict access to the vm minecraft server. would that work? or is there somthing im misisng?

currently my setup is a dsl modem that goes, to my router/WAP which is a eero, that i plan to eventually replace with a Banna pi R4 which will run openwrt. but as of now the eero goes to my 48 port in my server room, and i have all my computer jacked into that. so to answer your question, my firewall is handled by my router and individual local rules by my machines. im kinda new to self hosting and port forwarding and pfsense looks pretty useful. i know pfsense is based on freebsd so is that a big plus vs openwrt?
please let me know, what some potential solutions could be.
Currently the plan is to use my 48 port cisco switch and put the server on a separate vlan. I assume that is very similar to your pfsense solution? Please correct me if im wrong
Soon…
Thanks! I wish the best for you aswell
Yeah my friends really weren’t my friends, they were all political dick heads. to be honest i really don’t care if another person has another political party they agree with. I’m pretty apolitical and think both sides have certain points that i agree with and disagree with. But somehow politics always got brought up and divided the friend group into political party’s and belligerent bickering ensued. So sophomore year, I just sat by myself and enjoyed my solace. until junior year, where i met some new friends that actually care and didn’t really care about politics and have been hanging with them since :D.
the year i broke off from them was heavily politicized, and the full friend group i had at the time is now completely dissolved and everybody moved away. and the person who i would consider the “leader” of the friend group, which i had multi experiences with. alot of the time would “Prank” me. which was ultimately a fucked up immoral “joke” if i can call it that.
we had a MC survival world we all played on, i mean sunk hours into. one day he blew up many peoples houses and put bedrock around. and left signs saying trolololo now see at this point it justs a guy being a dick. but there’s more to this story, so then him and his friend gaslight me for a week that a hacker logged onto the server and destroyed stuff. i explained i worried about if the hacker got our IP addressees and could hurt us. i got like 2 hours of sleep for all week. the other friend felt bad and eventually came clean about the “prank”.
Chef’s kiss
Yes, good
But what init system?
;)
Gentoo is great
I am somewhat in the same boat, but more gentoo sided. For the main repo they killed mkstage4 because its outdated and insecure. So like you i wanted to backup my data (my gentoo install) to my nas or local storage. Rsync is the magic bullet for this. You can use ssh to securley transfer data to or from the server. And it automate it via a cron job (i suggest fcron) for a automatic timed backup/sync. Now i will add, rysnc can be used as a backup. But as the name implies it syncs data from one pc to the other. So if you break your desktop and it syncs to your server. Your SOLPDQ, thats only if you automate it tho.
And for the services id reccomend making a directory and adding all the services to a group, which owns the directory. Or the more lazy solution, which is probably frowned uponed. But you can rsync your docker container data to a directory where it has permissions to copy/sync.
Id highly recommend Rsync tho and just syncing offsite to another computer
Micro is where its @ <3
Ahh man only ata?
I tried arch with the Posh desktop, awell as plasma mobile. They work really well and are intended for mobile devices
I dont know if this would be applicable for your use case.
But in gentoo one of the recommended ways to backup your system is rsync. Rsync is single threaded, but keeps all softlinks and hardlinks aswell as accepting an eclude list for directorys you want rsync to ignore. I have recovered from some pretty big dumb dumb moments and have used rsync to build packages on my threadripper and syncing them to lower power devices like my laptop and raspi. And they work pretty well!
If you do decide to go with rsync you can use “rsync -aP (from directory) (to directory)” the “a” stands for archive this keeps all permissons, softlinks and hardlinks. The P stands for a progress bar, so you can see how its going. Another benefit of rsync is you can start copying and stop and start and it will only SYNC over what isnt new or modified. After the files are synced over you need to edit your fstab (its af file where you computer mounts your disks) and grub-mk-config. If not re-install grub
Hope this helps
