Hey… that just gave me a small idea… what if we made a “flock” or “herd” of Mastodon servers? The group of servers would all federate with each other, have the same block and allow lists, moderation policy and teams spread throughout them.

When you make an account you can be assigned a random instance name within the flock. If your instance goes down you could still possibly log in using other servers? Main benefit would be spreading server costs and maintenance effort and de-centralized operating, but still keep a centralized feel to it?

People want to leave X, but they still want the same old, rather than new stuff to make things better as a whole. They don’t want to have to do this “pick a server” thing, they want to have an algorithm spoonfeed them popular content, and it would be best for them to have to put in zero extra effort. In Masto you have to put in the hashtags to get found, and search for and follow people and hashtags to find stuff you want, and essentially DIY-ing your feed seems to be too much work for people.

The feel of Lemmy communities is a little different than Reddit, even if the software features are mostly analogous and there are many Redditisms used.

Your average commentor/poster will stand out more in a small community, there’s less of being able to post and then slink away.

People have gotten used to a lot more comforting features of modern Reddit, Lemmy in both the users and in the software has more of a “Reddit 10-15 years ago” feel to it.

You probably know most of it so just some advice: Don’t format the Partition table (MBR to GPT etc.) on the disk whose data you wish to keep.

Shrinking a partition or moving it carries a small risk of data loss and will take significantly longer than creating a new partition (since data needs to be cut and pasted from one area of the disk to another). If your old laptop has an empty slot for another SSD or NVME drive you can plug that in, and still dualboot and having the new drive Linux only.

Also to deal with the occasional Windows cockups, just carry a boot-repair USB, the auto repair has fixed the Windows issue for me 90% of the time (the other times are usually boot order priority or other BIOS setting)

Seconding Philips. At HomeDepot the cheapest Philips bulbs are about 2.75 CAD each compared to 0.85 CAD each for the ecosmart and failure rates is under 1/5 the cheap brand for me. (Diabolically, the ecosmarts are cheapest when bought individually.) Philips’ dimmables are closer to $6 each but my dimmer switch lights use them and I like them a lot. My other lamps use El Cheapo brand because changing them out is quite easy.

A lingering question in my head about these Amazon and Home Depot bargain bin products. The ecosmart 80cent bulbs I have commonly fail by just becoming dim just like this guy’s. Well I can’t expect too much from bottom dollar quality.

When you do lots of deficit spending, the sustainable way is to use it to rebuild your country and strengthen it. Sending your most capable young men into Ukraine or in weapons factories, making expensive stuff that does nothing but explode, or stuffing propaganda money up people’s assholes to puppeteer them, does little for your country except extract everything of value and leave most of the country with nothing.

I’m no fan of China, but at least using large amounts of government funds to build needlessly fancy bridges, buildings, tunnels, railroads and highways brings prosperity and resilience to vast swaths of your country that you might be able to use later.

DDG only recommending older Reddit answers as a result of the Google deal may be a net positive for it then.

By definition if you make all the money you need to live from investments like stocks, bonds, or leasing out homes then you aren’t working class. If you work a regular job, but have some additional income from investment savings you are working class, but the Labour government isn’t having to focus on those investments going up as much as making your working life more comfortable.

Hahaha I saw the parent commentor of that chain notorious for getting into back and forth arguments, sometimes reasonable sometimes not, and I thought to myself, this is going to be fun. Then I recognized the username of that other .ml user as a known troll and I was like, yep now this is going to go way off the rails.

Seems not bad, a lot of vegan and vegetarian food options with catering I’ve occasionaly sampled have gotten comparably tasty, too. I’m not a compulsive meat-eater but I’m not on any strictly plant based diets either. We’ve long known that water and energy inputs for plants are an order of magnitude less than meat for the same output.

However, the Israeli military apparently used that Hamas information to bomb the Hamas house a second time and then targeted the Hamas ambulance as it attempted to rescue the Hamas survivors, killing the Hamas doctor and several Hamas children.
