I recommend learning on Scrimba.com. They have a screen cast system where an actual instructor tells you what to do in plain English with the corresponding code on screen. If you want to see how a change would affect the code, you can pause the cast and run the code yourself.

And if you want to learn back end, a back end programmer suggested learning PHP. Still in high demand in the job market.
