  • I think the difference is less that Islam is behind the curve and more that Islam is disproportionately practiced in theocratic nations. Religious echochambers that are largely monocultural get really fucked up really fast. Mormonism and all the fucked up shit in Utah. Hasidic Jewish communities, and israel. All the theocratic Muslim nations. Theres a reason the bible belt’s version of Christianity is more fucked-up than the version you more often find in the rest of the country. If I remember right its the Buddhist majority group carrying out a genocide in Myanmar – and I feel like in the west we tend to think of Buddhists as pretty peaceful.

An echo chamber normalizes things that otherwise wouldn’t be accepted as normal, and allows them to exacerbate themselves, and religions tend to have some fucked shit burried in them that shows up when it doesnt have to be rationalized to outsiders. You tend to see that fucked shit a lot less when the people practicing those religions are also in community with folks who aren’t part of their religion.

Which to be clear, is true of many things not just religion. You can also see it in pockets of political echochambers online, even on the fediverse, but online theres always the risk of context collapse, in a way that gets less and less true as a region becomes more monocultural, as tends to happen under theocracy.

  • We also really need to normalize lead management. When I went shooting in scouts as a kid I learned all the responsible gun operation saftey stuff, but never even thought about the lead exposure till I was an adult

I’d never even heard of de-leading products for getting yourself cleaned up after shooting until deviant ollam on YouTube talked about them in passing in a video

(great channel by the way, it’s hard to find any folks who talk about guns online that a turbo chud)

    Edit: misspelled “deviant” lol
