In other longer articles you find out that it’s nowhere nearly a billion. The Solar Farms used to underpin the investments do exist and are productive. They have value in the hundreds of millions of pounds, but its apparently not quite enough to satisfy all of the bonds when they come do in 2025 and 2026.
This article points the finger almost exclusively at Liam Kavanagh and almost ignores Sean Clark, Thurrock’s Finance Director.
A bit of digging turned up this much longer article published a year ago and while Liam Kavanagh and his companies feature in it there’s also quite a bit more about Sean Clark’s role in all this.
For one, Hexbear made it perfectly clear they expect their users to abide by the rules of the instances they visit and not cause trouble.
The users at Hexbear made it perfectly clear in the discussions about federation that they weren’t going to respect that request and were openly encouraging each other to brigade other instances. They seem to have quite a number of participants who were really looking forward to being able to “bully the libs” and a quick scan showed several comments about sending offensive DMs to users of other instances. I was also able to find multiple HB users who openly admitted to already being banned multiple times from beehaw for trollish community breaking behavior.
The idea that BH users would have been well behaved is wishful thinking as they’ve already shown the Fediverse how they behave. Their instance Admins and Users are also not shy with how they are approaching Federation. They very specifically want the freedom to participate in other instances without those instances being able to engage them. Put together they want the freedom to “own the libs” all across the Fediverse without having those same libs show up in their carefully crafted safe space. They want to eat their cake and have it too.
To be clear I don’t agree with how Lemmy.World handled the blocking of Hexbear. I would strongly have preferred community engagement on the issue prior to the block but looking at the Troll Army being formed at HB I can’t necessarily fault the admins of LW either. Dealing with ideologically motivated extremists is a lot of work that no one wants to do.

They have no insight into the manufacturers allotment of production, what that production schedule is, or how much of their production allotment they’ve already used. What you’re seeing in this article is “behind the scenes” look at just how deeply the US Government is involved in Healthcare.

“Bases”, when the majority of them are an office building with 20 people or less in it. Then there’s the ones like “Corinto (Nicaragua)” with no information listed and when click the base location turns out to be in the middle of the water with literally nothing there. Seriously, show me where this supposed base is. Perhaps its hiding in that little tiki hut on the beach or maybe it’s packed away in someone’s backyard shed?
The US has a lot of bases, there’s no denying that, but there are most definitely not 850 of them. That database is pure propaganda.
I took a few minutes and looked into this. Centrica owns more and does more than just British Gas Energy and looking at their website it appears that BGE is actually a pretty minor part of their profit picture as it represents only 98M GBP of the 3.3 Billion GBP reported by Centrica (and audited as such) in 2022.
If you download their 2022 Financial Statement (PDF Warning) it appears that by revenue BGE is smaller than Centrica’s Energy Market & Trading and by profit it is vastly smaller. If you jump to “4 . Segmental analysis © Adjusted gross margin and adjusted operating profit” you find that in 2022 BGE had an operating profit of only 72 Million GBP while EM&T and Upstream had 1,400 Million and 1,793 Million respectively.
The overwhelming majority of their profit isn’t coming via BGE charging consumers!
So the article headline is wrong. British Gas (Energy) did not have a 969 Million GBP profit, the Centrica group did and based on historical performance it’s quite likely that BGE only contributed 10% or so to that number.
This doesn’t mean that folks in the UK aren’t being overcharged or that something shouldn’t be done with your tax structure but this article leaves out critical detail that leaves the reader with false assumptions.
Gallium and germanium can be had as byproducts of the refining of aluminum and lead IIRC.
It’s really NBD, we have the ability to make our own and so do many Euro countries. We just didn’t bother because it’s a dirty process and China did it cheap.
I recommend you stay away from anything that requires any kind of portal to setup. If you have to download an app and create an account in order to pair the device or get it setup then don’t use that equipment. There’s a near endless array of sensors and things you can get now that work using Z-Wave, ZigBee, and even HomeKit that work DIRECTLY with HA, meaning that they don’t require commands to be sent up to the cloud via the Internet and then come back down to your device.
There’s an easy answer to that…don’t use IoT devices. I recently rebuilt my HA setup into a VM running on Proxmox, added a Zoos USB to ZWave dongle and then replaced every device that needed a network connection with a Z-Wave device. I have nothing left that needs, or can even connect to, the Internet and all of my routines / automations are fully local. I can turn my Router off and the only thing it will impact is remote access and voice control.
