That’s why I don’t swap for fedora. That’s the kind of help you tend to get unless you know someone who knows the distro, so I guess thanks for exemplifying :)

I haven’t tried those, but I did hop a bit on a bad hard drive. mint was too much (also o just hate it, tbh). Antixlinux was too much and that’s meant to run off a flash drive so the drive was failing, and now it isn’t (new 15 year old drive!!!) and Ubuntu is still a bit too much. But it runs a web browser which is all I need for a bedroom media device. I’d like more, but it’s enough.

But since then I’m seeking a different end goal. I was looking to optimize that old pos, but now if it just runs a browser and runs Plex web, I’m happy because it’s so old I can’t expect it to download for me… it can do, but not well and I have other machines for that. I tried to use it as a download device but lol, nope, can’t handle that many p2p connections on 4g ram.

But I’ll try those on flash drives and see what they can do for me! Thanks for the recommend!

I’m probably going to get downvoted for this but I’m a Linux noob overall…. Windows has historically been what I’ve used. Or Ubuntu. I did distrohop to antixLinux and other really super small distros, but they didn’t fix my problems and I ended up back on relatively bloaty Ubuntu for further testing and sadly it solved bout a third of my problems (the hardware is ancient enterprise shit with a whopping 4gb ram and 16 usb ports)

I’ve been looking for a Debian based system to replace Ubuntu because I’m a noob and Debian-based is super different from the fedora.

I’m sure fedora is great! Tons of people love it! But for a noob is can be really daunting. Especially when most Linux instructions come in three flavors “Ubuntu/debian” and 2 other things. Who knows which two. You, the advanced Linux user, probably know which two but your noob doesn’t. And doesn’t understand the difference.

I’m not a total noob but I prefer Debian because I know a person who gets Debian and can help me. If I knew a fedora user that was actually willing to help me, I’d use that, but I’ve never met one so I’ll stick with what I know.

It’s mind blowing to learn that AI/neural nets and the like have been in the works since the 80s… it wasn’t what we know now, but like deep blue, the computer program that won at chess, started development in 1985 and won in 1997 against the world champion (Gary Kasperov). Watson, the jeopardy-playing program, was in the early 2000s.

It’s taken a long time to get from there to the mess we have now, and now it’s all super rush rush… like chill, slow down and do it right.

The vpn doesn’t block ads or do really anything, it just routes all my traffic back to my home network so I’m using my pihole for DNS.

I’m not about to install even more crap to do a half-ass job when I could just renew my certificate and pass it along for config, and be done with it and never get ads in any app, home or not.

I’m just lazy, and it doesn’t really come up all that often.

I usually have a private vpn. It’s just isn’t always up. And I can’t be bothered to have it maintained most times because I’m not in control.

I’m considering setting it up through my router which has a built in option, so I don’t have to rely on my third party, but honestly I almost never leave pihole protected networks. So not a priority.

As long as the ads don’t federate in an un-blockable way, they can do as they like. I wouldn’t make an account there, I’d rather donate actual money than have a degraded experience (which for sure works out better for everyone), but I get the drive to monetize.

And they should absolutely -not- be allowed to federate ads, for any reason, since it goes against the vibe. But inevitably there will be “sponsored posts” (probably already are), and I think those instances/users will see themselves fade to oblivion, as long as new users are brought to understand that they could just chip in $2 and never see an ad.

It’s so weird, I don’t even notice the lack of ads most of the time (pihole, never leave home, so it’s roughly the same experience I’m used to)

But when I go out? Oh man fediverse is the only site I’ll use because I know it’s safe from ads. The other privacy/user-focus stuff is just a bonus.

I got a “sales” job once and during training this is basically what they preached. Find the pain point and lay into it until they relent and sign up for the thing that will fix the pain.

Made me super uncomfortable and I quit 2 days into training, because a lot of what the place did was accessibility accommodations, so it was basically harassing old and disabled people going about their day, and making them feel bad about their shitty situation to take their money. No thanks.

I always feel relief when I’m out of the commitment but actually breaking it makes me feel like crap.

Eye contact aversion isn’t necessarily poor body control, it’s been studied quite a bit from various angles and found that people with autism who avoid eye contact do so because they feel actual discomfort, which can be found with fmri in combination with eye tracking software. In milder cases, the aversion is like an inversion of normal social sensations (that is, NT people feel similarly uncomfortable avoiding gaze as ASD with mild aversion do meeting it). In worse cases, it appears to be an over activation of a facial recognition system that produces intense distress.

That was actually my exact thought - I used to love wow but I absolutely hated most of the people who played. They ruined the game for me, and I was -dedicated- (not 19 years but 6, from vanilla through second expac, raid leader, raid MH, guild second, had an alt with its own guild and all tabs bought for a personal bank, etc.)

With something like wow I’d actually be willing to buy the server spinner if the official servers are still active (since game is subscription based they aren’t going to drop it free), just to have the option to play with people I like and nobody else. Doesn’t even have to be people I know, I’d be happy to find people in forums/communities/etc. to play with, just a limited group with a barrier of some sort for entry. Oh and the ability to ban.

I miss the social aspect of that sort of game, but I just dislike the general public too much to be willing to play any of them at this point.

“Worthless in the future” isn’t really right even for mmos tho. Just depends what sort of person you are.

I mean if someone can spin up their own server and just play with a group of friends (maybe 10-20 people?) that’s basically the bulk of the game’s content available. Sure, stuff like PuG, auction house, etc. won’t have any value but… in my experience those are such minor parts of the games most of the time as to be trashable.

Personally I would prefer playing mmos with a small dedicated group I know over the public at large. Well populated servers tend to be a miserable experience for people who want a group game but not a public group. Even if you stick to your own guild, people in the world are assholes on purpose whenever they can be.

So I’m strongly of the opinion that any game requiring a server should have a server spin-up utility launched free when the official servers go down. At least give people the option.
