Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Kevin O’Leary Pleads With Locals to Allow His Massive Data Center If He Shrinks It Down to the Size of One ManhattanEnglish
3·13 hours agoThere are 4U server cases that hold 77 3.5” hard drives, and you could rig up empty cases with NAND of various forms and get even more density, if you could keep cooling under control.
Also, most datacenters will not use 4TB disks, you would use giant 20TB enterprise disks (for spinning rust) or 8TB enterprise SAS or nVME drives. You will lose some of that capacity to redundancy though, as RAID and region replication takes place.
So total capacity, minus disk first losses (so *0.85 as a rule of thumb) and then divide by the redundancy (probably / 3)

31·17 hours agoThey’re not intercepting it because the plan was for the defiant drug users to be poisoned and genocided so that the god fearing law abiding sees-authority-as-divine Christian nationalists would be the only ones left

272·21 hours agoFent was the reaction to young Americans discovering that the Drug War was bullshit. We all discovered that when used responsibly, we could have weed. We could have psychedelic experiences. All the bad shit that was going to happen was happening because of bad people, and it wasn’t the drugs that changed those people.
Fent adulteration was an attack on all people who dared to oppose the law and get high. It was a genocide against defiers, in the same way that crack was used against black people.

31·2 days agoThat can never work because the incentive to manipulate that system and then claim the results are fair because of it’s theoretical power of accountability, which it was sold on, cannot be broken and therefore we MUST accept the results is too great.
The moment someone cracks it, they become the new lords. Same problems as the current system.
Paper doesn’t have this problem, because you can see the paper. You can count paper with machines, but you can also verify with humans and - importantly - humans without PHDs.
Voting is the literal keys to the empire. I’m not letting some billionaire vibecode his way into the white house…again

Technology@lemmy.world•Report: White House delaying release of voting machine security studyEnglish
201·2 days agoI actually don’t like this XKCD, this is a bad answer to why electronic voting is bad.
Mostly because it is a largely obtuse process that most people can’t see or understand.
“Trust the magic rock is counting fairly and that bad people who would want to manipulate it in order to obtain power and conquer you haven’t had a chance to do so.” You cannot code your way out of that.
Everyone understands marks on paper. No one understands buffer overrun RCE, resistive touchscreen calibration, or database triggers and log sharding.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Need advice for car in poor weather: On a standard car (no fancy tech except for a reverse camera), how do you use the side mirrors to reverse safely when it is really dark outside AND heavy raining?
2·7 days agoIf your hazard lights are illuminating the area, why aren’t your back-up lights? The white lights for backing up are meant to be “rear-facing headlights” and should be bright enough to light your surroundings. It seems many manufacturers have forgotten this over the years.
You can also try putting Rain-X on your side windows and your mirrors, that can help with heavy rain conditions.

I dunno if this is a rhetorical game we play with ourselves in our heads but whether it’s or it isn’t, we know exactly why they are doing it and we have for many years.
Your car has an active cellular connection whether you pay to rent time on it or not and it transmits your location, an ID number, usage habits including driving controls, music preferences, and possibly keywords spoken while in or near the vehicle, to the manufacturer. They relay that data to the government who uses it to learn who you associate with and when and where, and they sell it to your insurance company who monitors you for risky behavior, and they also sell it to advertisers who also profile you to device what the best things to try and sell you will be.
