(crosspost - hope this is OK)
I created a new community/magazine for British/UK comedy discussion - sitcoms, stand-ups, etc.
One of the below should work, I’ve found that pasting the URL into search works best for Lemmy:
!ukcomedy
!British [email protected]
Sweet, we all need a laugh now more than ever. I’ve been on here a couple of weeks and still don’t fully understand it… do I need to sign up / make a new login for each instance?
Nope! OP’s formatting has gone a bit wonky so it looks confusing but just click here and you can subscribe in the sidebar.
Notice how that lets you view the magazine through a lemmy.world URL even though the mag itself is on fedia.io, which isn’t even Lemmy it’s Kbin! Magic :)
Brilliant, that worked perfectly and I’m now subscribed. Thanks!
So is this the magic trick, if I want to subscribe to a different community that’s currently federated, I add it after lemmy.world/c/ ?
Pretty much, but bear in mind your instance needs to already know the community exists for that to work.
So if you ever try it and get a 404 error it means lemmy.world hasn’t been told about the community yet. You’ll need to go back and search for it first from lemmy.world/search (it’s the magnifying glass icon in the site header). Syntax is
!community@instance
to find Lemmy communities, or the full URL for Kbin magazines. It sounds complicated when I write it out but you soon get used to it 😅I’m sure it’ll feel like second nature soon enough! Also perhaps it’s good for us to have to work for it a little, instead of having everything spoonfed all the time haha.
That’s the spirit!
You shouldn’t have to for most instances but it can depends on each instance.
The admins of an instance can choose to defederate and that blocks communication between themselves and all/some other instances (see beehaw). In that case you’d need two accounts but its safe to say if that were to happen between most instances this place would fall apart as nobody is going to juggle between different accounts.
Cheers, that makes sense. @TeaHands has provided a working link… am now subscribed.
